For months an unscrupulous arsonist has been terrorizing the city of Nuremberg. Detective Inspector Ulf Maiwald is under enormous public pressure.

In his desperate search for the connection between the arson attacks - on buildings apparently chosen at random - Maiwald turns to the psychologist Dr. Silvia Jansen. Silvia is treating the sixteen-year-old Jens Anders who was present when his father, Peter, died in the first fire and has since been suffering from delusions. Silvia Jansen, however, gives Maiwald short shrift. Not until the case takes a dramatic turn, with the evidence pointing ever more clearly to Jens himself as the arsonist, does Silvia agree to co-operate with the police. Her research casts suspicion on the new boyfriend of Jens' mother, an astrologist and shady character, known as Nikodemus.But then Silvia deciphers the fatal system of the fires. A race against time begins...
