Single mother Nina Hausner is worried about her son: Tim should have come home from school long ago. Nina's anxiety grows. Then she notices the flashing blue light reflected in the windows of her flat. A boy has apparently been run over by a car. But the forensic evidence indicates that the boy was probably dead before he was run over. On arrival at the scene of the accident, Nina is only able to see that the victim is a child. The police refuse to give her any information and even prevent her from approaching the scene of the accident. Soon afterwards she discovers the bitter truth: the dead boy is her son Tim. Detective Inspectors Jürgen Tauber and Jo Obermeier investigate the tragedy. Was it manslaughter or murder? They question friends and relatives of Nina and Tin Hausner who might be able to help them in their investigations. Yet the neighbours know very little about the mother and child since they moved in shortly after the separation from Tim's father Manfred. The latter is a lorry driver and has been on route in the Baltic states for days. Nor is his brother, Erwin Hausner, able to help the police in their enquiries. The D.I.s feel emotionally devastated by Tim's death: Obermeier is unable to forget that the child was a boy of the same age as her own son. Tauber finds himself completely unable to cope with the grieving mother. She cannot understand why she is not permitted to see her son's body in order to take her leave of him. Even when Tauber understands what the mother is going through, it is not in his power to help her since the forensic post-mortem tests have not yet been concluded.
